Our campsite last night at Pirovac was rocky and noisy. Unfortunately we chose a site next to the footpath and we had pedestrian traffic all night long. And I broke the tent pole again. I'm becoming an expert at fixing this pole.
We packed up nice and early and went up to the campsite market and bought some milk and yogurt to go with our muesli. At first Peter wasn't into having the big bowl of cereal, but after 7 weeks he's getting the hang of it. The other thing I noticed today was the wind, it was howling overhead. It was coming from the north and we were heading south and south east all day. It should help on the climbs hopefully.
With Peter doing the majority of the cooking and I basically make breakfast of pouring muesli into a bowl with yogurt and milk, at least I do make a small contribution to the tour. So, after breakfast we rolled along with the tailwind at a good pace looking down into the beautiful clear waters of the Adriatic. The water is just so perfect and clean to gaze into. We did do a slight planned deviation into a small town to check out the waterfront. The photo below is of the beautiful village we rode through. One can never get bored of looking at a million villages lining the Croatian coast.
As we cycled along the promenade we came across this bear sitting on top of the boat with a fishing rod. I have no idea what that suppose to mean in Croatian or any other language.
Lunch was had in the city of Sibenik. The photo below is of the Sibenik Cathedral.
The Cathedral of St. James is a triple-nave basilica with three apses and a dome (32 m high inside) in the city of Šibenik, Croatia. It is the church of the Catholic Church in Croatia, and the see of the Šibenik diocese. It is also the most important architectural monument of the Renaissance in the entire country. Since 2000, the Cathedral has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is often mistakenly known as "St Jacob's", because Croatian, like many other languages, uses the same name for both "James" and "Jacob". It is dedicated to Saint James the Greater.
The building of the church was initiated in 1402, though plans on its construction had already begun in 1298, when Šibenik became a municipality.
The milestone for today was not only surviving another day on earth, but having completed 3000kms on this tour. Below is the photo of achieving such milestone. Remember we are elder statesmen doing this stuff.
After lunch we cycled another 20kms to the town of Trogir our resting place for the evening. Peter did some searching and got us a great apartment with air con and wifi for 60 Aussie total. The apartment is very close to the town and all the attractions. Once settling in to our room and washing the cycle gear it was off to town to check out the castle. The photo below is of Kamerlengo a castle fortress. It was built by the Republic of Venice. The castle was built in the mid-15th century by Marin Radoj as part of an expansion of the Veriga Tower, built on the site in the late 14th century. It is used as a location for performances during the summer months. The word kamerlengo refers to the title of a Venetian administrative official (a chamberlain). The castle is quite spectacular and views from the flag tower over the city was just amazing.
The photo below shows the type of yacht to the one I'll be buying when I get home. The yachts and luxurious motor boats in the harbour of Trogir is mind blowing. Multi million dollars leisure crafts catering for all needs and pockets. I prefer the small yacht at this stage.
The photo below is of the alley ways we ventured through all afternoon. The shops all sell the same stuff, full of t-shirts and souvenirs.
After walking around for the arvo we headed to the supermarket and purchased some food for tonight. Our little apartment has its own cooker, so Peter is going to cook up a storm. I'll be watching with clean hands.
We had a great day today and riding off the main road and into small villages is what this holiday is all about. We try and keep off the main roads as much as possible and this has really paid off for us. Tomorrow we ride to Split the 2nd largest city in Croatia, and hopefully it should be about 40kms along the coast, then a rest day.
Until tomorrow, safe riding.
